Trust study awards

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. Mr H. R. Unger, of Christchurch, the chief clinical psychologist of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, and adviser in psychology to the Mental Health Division, is one of 14 New Zealanders granted study awards for 1972 by the Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

Mr Unger will study the development of community psychiatric teams and community mental-health clinics in Australia.

The secretary of the Auckland Clerical Workers’ Union (Mr B. T. Brooks) will study white-collar unions and disputes settlement in Australia, Switzerland, Britain and Scandinavia.

The Rev. J. M. Craighead, an Anglican minister of Hamner Springs, who is the chaplain of Queen Mary Hospital, will go to the United States to study the clinical treatment of addictions, principally that of alcohol. Others to receive awards were:—

The district Maori welfare officer of the Department of Maori and Island Affairs in Gisborne (Mr W. N. Jaram); Mr A. W. Beasley, an orthopedaedic surgeon, of Wellington; Mr G. W. Stanley, the superintendent of the Wellington Free Ambulance; Mr N. A. Watene, of Petone, the welfare officer of the Gear Meat Company; Sergeant R. M. K. Workman, of Wellington, the officer in charge of the youth aid section of the Police Department; Mr D. V. Merton, of Upper Hutt, the fauna conservation officer of the WildLife Division of the Department of External Affairs; Mr J. D. Tenqulst. of Featherston, a technical officer at the Wallaceville Animal Research Centre; Mr E. J. McKay, of Hamilton, a medical technologist; the Rev. L. W. More, a Presbyterian minister who is chaplain at Paremoremo prison; Mr A. W. Paterson, a teacher at Taieri High School; and Miss M. R, Preston-Thomas, the matron of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Rotorua.
