ARRESTS IN ISRAEL

(N.Z P. A -Reuter —CopvriflhO TEL AVIV, December 8. Israeli security services have detained 18 Arabs and two Jews suspected of belonging to a spy and sabotage network controlled from Syria, police revealed last night.

A senior police officer said that it appeared that a Christian Arab, formerly resident in Haifa but now believed to be living in Damascus, organised and controlled the network. He named the man as Habib Kahawaji, believed to have been a member of the Arab nationalist El-Ard movement, banned in Israel seven years ago.

He and his wife left Israel in 1968 after being released from detention where they had been held on suspiciion of spying but were never convicted.

Speaking on Israel Radio, the deputy chief inspector. General Amir Peri, said that the network was still in its initial formative stages in preparation for sabotage in Israel when it was uncovered.
