Promise to restore child exemptions
The Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) has promised to restore child exemptions taken from taxpayers in the last Budget of Mr R. D. Muldoon.
Mr Kirk is quoted in the latest issue of the “Mercan- i tile Gazette” as saying that 1 the middle-income man had j “taken a hammering” in taxa- 1 tion. There had to be some re- i structuring of the tax tables, t Mr Kirk said. While the i previous Government had I not increased taxation, it i had allowed inflation to force people into higher levels in < the tax scale, so that, in fact, t they paid higher rates. t
“This forced the middleincome group and the people below them to carry a higher part of the cost of running the country,” Mr Kirk said. “When you see a position where a married man with two children pays more tax unless he earns more than $BB a week you realise the impact of that.” Mr Kirk said he would undertake the restructuring of tax scales in order to provide effective incentives.
