ASIANS’ STRIKE
Pickets in clash
(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) LOUGHBOROUGH, Dec. 7. Asian pickets on strike at a Loughborough hosiery mill clashed with other workers yesterday, and the police were called to the scene.
The clash developed after 40 workers inside the Mansfield hosiery mill had run outside to deal with pickets who had intercepted a lorry trying to enter, and had flattened its tyres. About 500 Asian workers went on unofficial strike almost six weeks ago over a pay claim and allegations of racial discrimination. The strike was declared official yesterday. Two shifts at the company’s other mill, four miles away, yesterday voted to leave their union today. “We are not prepared to pay money to a union to support 500 Asians on strike,” their spokesman said.
