Founder farewelled
The retiring founder of the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps in Christchurch, Miss Margaret Hall, was officially farewelled at the end-of-year parade on Wednesday evening. Former cadets, officers, and committee members from many parts of New Zealand, were among the 250 present at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus. Miss Hall formed the corps in February, 1955, after training with the G.N.T.C. in England, and has been its com-
manding officer until last: year. Her responsibilities have : been assumed by Miss Rosa- : lind Sampson, who paid tri- • bute to the respect for auth-. ority and admiration engen- ‘ dered by Miss Hall. She had attracted many people, from all walks of life to the unit, and her proficiency was responsible for its present strength. Miss Hall will leave Christchurch in January to live on the West Coast. Miss Sampson and Mr N. Otegen, pre-
sident of the corps committee, presented her with a specially commissioned painting by Vladimir Auzins depicting the view of Sumner from her home on Scarborough. Miss Hall Is shown at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, with a photograph from the Naval Headquarters collection showing one of the Seaward Defence motor launches — the craft on which the girls of the corps train.
