Possible recount
(N.Z. Press Associations WELLINGTON, Dec. 7. The battle for Wellington Central may not be over. Labour Party officials said tonight they were still considering a magisterial recount of the poll which cost Mr David Shand the seat by 27 votes. The party general secretary, Mr John Wybrow, said he was “a bit disturbed” by the high number of informal votes. More than 600 were ruled out before Wednesday’s final count.
“I’m also told that 32 unsigned votes were cast aside as informal, and that some specials carried the witnessing signature of the deputy returning officer but not the signature of the voter,” said Mr Wybrow. Tomorrow morning Mr Shand will probably decide whether to ask for a recount.
The Labour Party Is en* couraged by a precedent At the 1946 General Election the Labour candidate for Raglan cut back his losing margin from 39 to 13 on a magisterial recount “The situation is still quite open,” said Mr Wybrow. “We’re looking at the technicalities. It’s not sour grapes.”
