"Different countries - different customs” or in nautical language, “different ships-different long splices.” on board the 10,050ton Japanese motor vessel Matushima Maru which has been discharging 6500 tons of Vancouver bulk potash at Lyttelton, an interesting Japanese maritime feature was explained yesterday by Captain Yoshikazu Yanai, aged 47, of Tokyo.

On board most Japanese vessels visiting Lyttelton there is normally a picturesque doll enclosed in a glass case, about three feet high and situated generally, in the master’s cabin. This is quite distinct from the Shinto shrine found on the bridge of all Japanese vessels. The doll on board the Matushima Maru is about two feet tall and is referred to as “Otsbone,” Captain Yanai said. It is clad in red. white, and gold costume. Its significance is purely historical and “Otsbone” was a powerful woman (unmarried) who controlled many servants for the imperial families of Japan in earlier days. The doll, normally supplied when a ship was launched, was a mascot or good luck charm, Captain Yanai said.

Also in his cabin was a toy koala bear which he had purchased locally for his youngest son, Hiroyuki, aged 9. For his older sons, Chlkayukl, aged 14, and Noriyuki, aged 11), Captain Yanai has bought kitsets of New Zealand postage stamps. A keen golfer, like many of his crew, Captain Yanai has not played in Christchurch, because it was too cold, he said. Because of some controversy regarding the spelling of his home town Tokyo—Captain Yanai said that according to Japanese and English custom, the spelling "Tokyo” was customary. But the Spanish and French spelling was “Tokio,” he said. He was adamant that both ways were possible, except that he had been educated to “Tokyo.” The 14-knot, Matushima Maru will complete discharge at New Plymouth and Napier, then load logs at Tauranga for Japan.
