PLANNING APPEALS
Motor lodge approval The Special Town and Country Planning Appeal Board yesterday dismissed appeals against the Christchurch City Council allowing Avon Motor Lodge to build a six-storey bedroom block in Oxford Terrace. The board dismissed the appeals of Elsie and Jack Locke, of Oxford Terrace, ruling that they were not appellants within the meaning of the act. Another appellant, the Christchurch Civic Trust, withdrew from the hearing without calling evidence. The board found that, viewed as a conditional application, the proposal of the company was on a site suitable for the use which had already been established there. The amenities of the neighbourhood were not likely to suffer any detraction. As a specific departure application, it was not contrary to the public interest and would not interfere with the existing district scheme. The board’s decision was required to deal with the appeal of Dorothy Beatrice White, owner of the property at 348 Oxford Terace and 7 Hurley Street. Miss White objected on the ground that a large parking area would be alongside her property.
