Purpose of articles on plants
Many plants come under review in these columns, sometimes as part of a specific article on a genera or perhaps as random mentions in listing of species for particular purposes. No one article purports to be an exhaustive treatise on any particular matter and as a consequence most plants are only briefly described, some are merely mentioned in passing and others do not appear to receive any recognition at all. The primary purpose of all articles relating to plants is
to create an awareness of their existence, particularly of those less commonly grown. In this connection it should be stressed that such references are not necessarily restricted to those plants which are readily obtainable as this would, in many ways restrict the writer’s intent (of purpose). Again, the considerable differences of local climate, soil and situation means that usually only a generalisation can be made, particularly where observations have been limited, as regards the growing and suitability of many plants. It is felt that all these shortcomings are of minor significance so long as the main objective is achieved, of creating and furthering interest in plants.
