OBITUARY Mr F. Agassiz

A well-known Canterbury oarsman, 'Mr Franklyn Agassiz, died in Christchurch at the week-end. He was 77. He joined the Avon Rowing Club when he was 15 and was very successful in the maiden and junior divisions before reaching senior status in 1918. He was bow oarsman in the club’s senior four in 1918 and 1920, when the club had 68 active members. In 1923 he was stroke of Canterbury’s first interprovincial fours —he was the holder of the red coat for this event —and was stroke for the Canterbury team again in 1927 and 1928. After World War 11, Mr Agassiz turned his attention to coaching and, at a time when the club’s activity was at a very low ebb, coached the club’s very successful maiden fours. One of the rowers who came under his influence was Mr E. R. Lindstrom, the assistant coach for the successful New Zealand rowing team at the Munich Olympic Games., Mr Agassiz spent a great deal of his time maintaining equipment for the club and was at various times the club captain and club vice-presi-dent. From 1966 he was the club’s patron. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Golf—B. J. Hunt has been chosen to captain the British Ryder Cup golf team to play the United States at Mulrfield, Scotland, from September 20 to 22. Hunt, aged 42, has played in eight previous Ryder Cup clashes. The last time Britain won the biennial match was In 1933, although it drew 13-13 three years ago.
