Centrepoint grows

Centrepoint, the proposed social and recreational club for Christchurch women, is growing in membership while funds are being raised to turn it into a “reality of bricks and mortar.” Mrs Jan Pluck, who with Mrs Jennifer Heal had the idea for the club, told about

160 members and prospective members on Tuesday evening that there was no restriction on membership.

“The more members we can gather the more funds we will have to put towards finding a building for our use.” NO ‘CLOSED CLUB’

Centrepoint is seen as a place where Christchurch women can relax, leaving their children in the creche provided, and where sporting and recreational facilities will be available. It is hoped to keep membership open and attract all kinds of women, to get away from the “closed club” atmosphere. Because it will be available to members and non-members alike, Centrepoint organisers want a building in the central city. “We have approached several land agents and asked them to keep their eyes open for something suitable as we will require rather large premises,” said Mrs Pluck.

Social functions are being arranged to raise funds and regular meetings will be held to inform members of developments.

It is planned to keep the Centrepoint subscription at $2 until there is a building in sight and the organisation has a definite goal. Subscriptions will cover overheads and any profit will be put back into the organisation to pay for extra amenities. OFFICE ENVISAGED

Mrs Heal told the meeting that Centrepoint hoped to obtain offices in Christchurch

near the centre of the city for the “administrative side of things.” “We would like to get a small office as cheaply as possible, where people could come to pay subscriptions or get information on Centrepoint, buy tickets and so on.” Several groups have been set up within the organisation to develop interest and raise funds. They are membership, fund-raising, information and social groups.
