Golf classic fund off to early start

The 1972 Garden City Golf Classic is only just over, but already a donation has been made towards the running of the event next year.

A Christchurch businessman, Mr J. Wallace McNeill, has given $25, which he hopes will be the forerunner to many similar gifts from smaller businessmen. In 1970 and 1971, Mr McNeill successfully canvassed for the multi-sponsorship of holes at $25 shares, but this year the minimum was $lOO. He expressed the hope yesterday that multi-sponsor-ship would be re-introduced next year. “I am sure that given an early start and the opportunity for smaller businessmen to play a part, the success of next year’s classic would be assured.”

The secretary of the tournament organising committee (Mr D. J. Craze) said yesterday that multi-sponsorship syndicates as organised by Mr McNeill had been discontinued this year because the Commissioner of Inland Revenue had made it clear that no donations of less than $lOO would be tax-deductible. If this restriction remained, it was unlikely that the policy would be changed. However, many of the $lOO and $2OO sponsorships were made up by people combining and this was a type of multi-sponsorship welcomed by his committee.
