High-class play in table tennis

Until last evening there had been little to enthuse about the A grade summer table tennis competition, but the fifth round match between Avonside I and University' gave ample compensation. University fielded its usual team, but Avonside I, which had varied its players each week, was represented by its strongest trio. M. W. Burrowes, B. T. Cross and L. A. Stewart have all played for Canterbury, and were favoured to win. However, the extra match play that the University students have had this season proved too much for Avonside, although the 9-3 margin flattered University. There were some excellent matches, none better than the contest between Cross and Yeoh Keat Chye, a former Canterbury representative whose appearances have been restricted by studies. Cross defended extremely well, sometimes brilliantly, but Yeoh was prepared to abide his time and await the high ball from which to smash the winner. The quality of play was fitting for a national final, and seldom is that standard seen at club level.

University gained two surprise wins through its third player, U. Loh, who accounted for Burrowes and Stewart with ease. His game has improved considerably through practising with such accomplished players as Yeoh and Yee Chow Boi. Linwood moved off the bottom of the points ladder with a narrow win against Avonside H. while Avonside HI, strengthed by the return of G. J. Rhind, was untroubled to beat Riccarton n. Selwyn retained its position in the lead with University by beat, ing Riccarton I, although W. D. Adamson (Riccarton) revealed his true potential with three singles victories.
