Antarctic rescue

Sir, —Congratulations and a warm tribute to the four young castaways and to their rescuers. However, I am concerned over part of their statements: “Flares fired towards helicopters and searching Hercules produced no result.” This is not surprising in the perpetual summer daylight and sea and snow reflection. Could not all survival kits include flares that emit plumes of black smoke, which in such conditions would be visible for many miles? Also, perhaps, a suitably-coloured captive selfinflating balloon, perhaps with a homing device. The writer was engaged, in a small way, in a somewhat limited rescue operation nearly 50 years ago, and these suggestions are intended to be constructive.— Yours, etc., 1923. December 5, 1972.
