Hombre ’s speed at Riccarton

All against his recent race form, Hombre might be a match for the best of the other sprinters in the second leg of the Hororata Racing Chib’s T.A.B. double on Saturday.

As a late worker, he had the worst of the conditions on a showery morning at Riccarton yesterday, yet he sped over half a mile in the hands of his rider, P. Smith, in 49 3-5.

Hombre showed much reluctance to trot away when taken on to the trial grass, but when he put his mind to galloping he showed characteristic speed. He ran the last three furlongs in 37 2-5. Earlier, when the footing was better, the unraced two-year-old, Heriah (L. Molloy), surprised in running half a mile in 48 3-5. In doing so she sped well clear of Princess Doretta (G. Sanderson). Heriah, a Turon filly in M. McCann’s team, will have her first race at the Hororata meeting. Ribaldo had his Hororata Cup rider. G. W. Mein, up when he ran a mile in 1:46, the last half mile in 52. He was joined before half way by Escali (R. Wakefield), which was a length clear at the end.

Ribaldo seldom does anything of much account in training. Nor does Donnybrook Fair, but he won his gallop with Wairewa and The Blues yesterday by threequarters of a length, recording 53 1-5 for his last half mile.

The stablemates Dhow (N. Cowles), Smack (M. Skelton), and Kayak (W. Lucas) started near the seven furlongs. Kayak dropped behind early in the run home, and Dhow made steady progress to range up to Smack. They ran their last half mile in 52 4-5. Skelton will ride Dhow at

a few pounds overweight in the Hororata Cup on Saturday. the stable-mates Shipmaster (M. Cohen) and Foreign Aid (K. Miller) started near the seven furlongs and sprinted their last half mile strongly in 50 4-5. ACTION FREE Red Chips (E. Low) and Polystyrene (I. Grant) took 54, but the pleasing feature of the gallop was the freedom J?ed Chips showed in his action. J. C. Tomkinson’s pair, Baltic Blue (G. Mein) and Jury (A. Eastwood) — two of the early workers — ran in from the half mile in 51 2-5. Pavlova’s Pal (W. Beck) led Idle Worker (E, Low) by a length, and Immortal (G. Caird) was in a gap of two lengths at the rear after their half mile in 51 3-5. Jim Beam (L. Molloy) and Nureyev (H. Pateman) sprinted their half mile in 50 4-5. Seaside Story (M. Skelton) followed in 50, Domastic (A. D. Hunt) in 50 3-5, and Japita (O. Alining) in 51 1-5. Bun Tuck (P. Smith) led Rebel Lad (I- Grant) over a mile in 1:47 2-5, widening his lead to 10 lengths while running his last half in 53, The stable-mates Margaret’s Glory (D. Sanderson) and Ilia (W. Berry) recorded 53 2-5 for their half mile. Shudup (M. Skelton) and All Out (W. Lucas) ran their half mile in 53 1-5, quickening for the last three furlongs in 39 2-5.

Fountain King (Hunt) shaped well to run his half mile in 50 1-5.
