In the report in “The Press” on Monday of the opening of the Sir Stanley Goosman bridge across the Taramakau River it was said that Mrs Rose Steele was “flown over for the ceremony by the organising committee. Another free air ticket from Australia was given to an old resident of Kumara, Mr Jack Pammont.”

The chairman of the opening day social committee (Mr Jack Fitzsimmons, of Inchbonnie) yesterday denied this. “The "committee did not pay these fares,” he said.
