Enrolment strain

Additional strain would be placed on classrooms at Hill* tnorton High School next year as a result of increased enrolments for the third form, the headmaster (Mr P. W. Murdoch) said on Mon* day evening. Mr Murdoch told the school’s board of governors that so far 332 enrolments had been received and more were expected. "We have had to organise for 11 third forms instead of 10 — this calls for considerable extra teaching time, and will place additional strain on our rooming,” he said. Part-time staff will be employed to meet the school's increased needs.

Mr Murdoch said he was very anxious to see that enrolments for 1974 were kept to about 318 — as was planned for 1973 — so that rooming problems do not occur and the over-all roll did not grow to an undesirable size.

The board's secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that the Department of Education had approved a $1660 grant for the resiting of two prefabricated classrooms to make room for the proposed art and craft block extension.

Community work done at Marylands, and the Salvation Army home in Addington, by sixth form pupils accredited with university entrance, was described by the board's chairman (Mr T. W. Turner) as “very meritorious." Some of the pupils worked in their own time to finish decorating a playroom at Marylands, Mr Murdoch said.
