Fine after assault

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, Dec. 5. A Hastings welfare officer, Te Matua Oterangi Rongoiti Tomoana, was fined $2OO and told in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court today that his record of service was all that saved him from imprisonment on his second conviction for assault. Tomoana appeared before Mr W. K. L. Dougali, S.M., for sentence on a charge of assaulting Sydney Alan Marsden Eyles, a repossession officer. Evidence was given last week that the offence occurred on the Waipatu marae when Mr Eyles called about a repossession order he had on fomoana’s son’s car. The Magistrate said he found it difficult to understand how Tomoana, With a War record including a decoration for bravery, should be facing a second charge of assault.
