ARMS DEAL

Japanese denial (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright/ TOKYO, Dec. 5. The Japanese Defence Agency has denied as totally groundless a French report that France and Japan would shortly sign an agreement on Japanese purchases of French weapons. The latest edition of the French weekly magazine, “Le Point,” had reported that an important agreement on weapon exports would soon be signed between Japan and France.

The magazine is quoted by the Japanese news agency, Kyodo, as saying that there had been negotiations between the French authorities and Mr Takuya Kubo, of the Japanese Defence Agency, and that the weapons to be exported would include AMX 30 type tanks, helicopters, and various small weapons. Mr Kubo visited France from November 25 to 29, during which he visited the French Ministry of Defence and its weapons headquarters.

A Defence Agency spokesman quotes Mr Kubo, who returned home yesterday for a two-week tour of Europe, as saying that the French report was totally groundless.
