“Gallery” at best

“Gallery” wound up its contribution to the election campaign with one of its best efforts. The idea of having four front-benchers from each of the principal parties to talk, in pairs, about set subjects —law and order, unemployment, the cost of party promises, health services, finance—was excellent

It was a very tidy way to conduct affairs, and gave viewers a very good chance to think about these subjects without distraction. It was a lively “Gallery" pro. gramme, and a very credit* able one, all round. “We owe him his day in court,” one of the first phrases used in “Hie Storefront Lawyers,” had a wearily familiar ring, and it seemed that the programme was to be another of the poor quality which has marked the series so far. But it was given life and meaning by Harrison Radley. He was cast as a young Negro construction worker who replaced a white man on a job, a pawn in a political gambit. Much of the acting was ordinary, the anti-Negro, anti-white antipathies were paraded once again, but Radley, in his court scene, gave a really powerful performance, producing a most convincing bitterness and disillusionment. There was little else of note. "All In The Family’’ is a reliable comedy but was taken on trust on Thursday evening. The All Blacks’ match with Ulster was again covered most competently, Cliff Morgan’s commentary again being first-class. But a little more could have been heard from his fellowcommentator, Michael Gib* son, if only for the pleasure of listening to his voice.— PANDORA.
