De Thier not to defend Finn

B. G. de Thier, the Canterbury Finn class yachtsman who has finished among the top 10 skippers in world competition three times since 1969, will not be defending his national title this season. “I intend to have a quiet season and get back into serious competition next year," de Thier said yesterday. His decision was also prompted by the expense incurred in travelling to Wellington for the New Zealand championship, to be sailed during the first week of January. However, de Thier — who was tenth in the very strong monotype class at the Kiel Olympic regatta to add to seventh and eighth placings that he has recorded m world contests — intends to defend his Canterbury and South Island titles.

The opening heats of the provincial senes next weekend will be de Thier’s first outing this season. His Finn, and that of the New Zealand

reserve, B. E. Treleaven, were unloaded from the freighter, Mirrabooka, at Lyttelton yesterday. Treleaven is expected to resume racing at Sumner Bay today and this should stand him in good stead for the Canterbury contest at Lyttelton. The South Island championship has been allocaUd to Timaru, on March 25 and 26.
