‘STATE OF SIEGE’
Bolivian strike (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LA PAZ, Nov. 24. Bolivia was under tight military control today as factory and bank workers held a protest strike to demand freedom for arrested leaders of their labour unions. President Hugo Banzer Suarez imposed a “state of siege” yesterday saying there was a conspiracy in the unions to overthrow his right-wing Government. The strikers said the numerous union leaders were seized before dawn yesterday after calling for a strike by factory workers. They added that there would be no agreement until they were released. The original strike call waa in protest over the remark of the Interior Minister, Mr Mario Adett Zamora, on Tuesday that the unions were infiltrated by extremists bent on a showdown with the regime. This followed several weeks of apparently sterile talks between the Government, which devalued the peso last month, and the unions, which want more pay to counter resultant price rises.
