Promising sprinter

Well ahead of the field in the 100 metres sprint event is 15-year-old Beverley Peterson, already the Canterbury senior women’s champion. Although she is still in the fourth form at Hillmorton High School, Miss Peterson — who has been competing since she was 10 — has reached a high level in athletics. “My mother was in a Commonwealth Games team. 1 suppose her influence started me off. I enjoy running and think I’ve beaten her times now,” she said. This season Miss Peter-

son’s best effort has been 12.3 sec for 100 metres. "I came third in the Munich trials, with a time of 11.9 sec, and fifth in the last national championship. I don’t think I will be able to improve my 100 metres time this season, but I would like to get my 200 metres time down.” Coached by Mr V. Briedis of the Technical club, she regularly wins sprint events in inter-club competitions. If she continues to improve her performances, Miss Peterson will be a likely candidate for the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team in 1974.
