RACING Topsy, Kaukapakapa for C.J.C. double

Everything points to a second generous helping of rich fare for North Island gallopers on Canterbury Gold Cup day at Riccarton today.

Topsy and Count Kereru should play dominating roles in the finish of the Canterbury Gold. Cup, and none appeals more than Kaukapakapa in the Jockey Club Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Whyte, will have his Hawke’s Bay Guineas winner Black Rod as a second-string runner in the first leg of today’s T.A.B. double, but on his Derby run he holds only the slimmest of chances, and His Bestone and Dhow will probably come in for stronger backing from those looking to the three-year-old division to supply tne winner. This son of Sobig and the brilliant race mare Shamrock Queen has a record that spells out steady improvement with each race and has earned favouritism for today’s race. The North Island will have a second Irwell Handicap runner In Daniel Defoe, whose race debut at Trentham on Labour Day produced a promising sixth. From past experience one good enough to finish as close to the money in a two-year-old race at Trentham often manages to cut a respectable figure when brought to Riccarton in November to race against South Island two-year-olds.
