Marylands aid defended

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 7. The chairman of the auxiliary of Marylands School (Mr J. B. Lagan) was palpably unfair in criticising an immediate Government grant of §lO,OOO to help meet the running losses of the school, said the Minister of Education (Mr Pickering) today.

Mr Pickering said he thought it was clearly understood, and Mr Lagan had ignored that part of his announcement which made it clear, that the grants of up to $lO,OOO for this year and up to $20,000 for 1973 to meet expected running cost deficits were purely an interim measure, solely to enable the school to keep going. “We are fully aware of the vast amount of maintenance required and possibly the

need for rebuilding the school,” said Mr Pickering.

“This whole question is actively under investigation to determine what is necessary to keep the school open on a long-term basis.” He said that the prior of Marylands (Brother R. Moloney) had earlier acknowledged the announcement of the grants as “very pleasing,” and it was generally recognised that the Government was making a sincere endeavour to keep the school open.
