To lecture on N.Z.

Two American residents of Christchurch have been invited to give lectures about New Zealand at a Californian university. They are Dr I. P. Pflaum and his wife, Melanie L. Pflaum, a novelist, who live on Clifton Hill, Sumner. The invitations are from Covell College of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

Covell College has for several years sponsored the Irving Peter Pflaum Award to outstanding students of Latin American affairs. On his visit to the college Dr Pflaum will present the 1973 award. He will also lecture in English and in Spanish to students of history and politics. Covell College is a bilingual institution with courses in both languages.

Melanie Pflaum’s novels. ““The Second Conquest” and “The Maine Remembered.” have been published in Christchurch recently. The Pflaums will lecture in California on various aspects of New Zealand and Mrs Pflaum will review contemporary New Zealand literature for courses in comparative literature at the College.

Dr Pflaum first visited New Zealand in 1969 and the next year was a visiting lecturer at the University of Canterbury. Since then they have returned twice to Christchurch for six-month visits.
