Handicapped children

Sir, —In reply to Mr Anderson, we have belonged to the I.H.C. Society for many years and as many times appealed for help, all in vain. Our gratitude goes to the Southland branch which, hearing of our plight, journeyed to Mount Cook and took our little boy back to Kindhaven in Invercargill for a holiday. Our admiration for this branch of the society is unquestionable. Surely the Government should have first responsibility for these children, a disabled children’s benefit and a whole new community service for the care of child and family from infancy a first need. The family as a whole is initially where help should begin. Why is it we can only measure help in material achievements — a new hostel or school? Why not human successes, too? Are we too negative? Is our Government concerned for every New Zealander? — I think not. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) JOSE SEYMOUR. November 3, 1972.
