Board works free of indebtedness

The final debentures had been repaid on a $322,520 loan raised initially in 1934 by the Waimakariri River Trust, and this made the board’s works free of loan debt, said the chairman (Dr W. R. Holmes) at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board.

As final costs were not in, it was not possible to say how much of the $40,000 second loan for the board’s new office building would be needed, said Dr Holmes, but even if it was taken up in full, only $90,000, or onethird, of the total cost of about $275,000 would have come from loans.

During the year, the board had received $31,896 from timber milled on its plantations, which was an indication of the value of the standing trees that would require felling in the next 14 to 15 years. New plantings were being made on the south side of the Waimakariri River. Dr Holmes was re-elected chairman, with Mr J. M. Pickering as deputy chairman.

Subdivision — As problems associated with the widening of Johns Road and the Sockburn-Styx railway

loop line could now be clarified, the board agree to prepare a subdivision plan for its land on Johns Road, and to call applications for leases.

Ashley River — Proposals for restoring and strengthening stopbanks on the Ashley River at a cost of $24,000 were sent to the Rivers Control Council for $2 for $1 subsidy approval. Refused — Mr and Mrs C.; W. Lee were refused a per-1 mit to discharge septic-tank effluent at School Road, Tai; Tapu, on the ground that it! would not be in the public! interest to risk lowering the quality of underground water.

Go-karting. — The defending champion, G. Emmick (United States) retained his international champion-of-champlon title, the main event of an International go-karting prix in Hong Kong.; H. Lee was second and A. Poon third, both from Hong Kong. I
