RACING Topsy picked to win Canterbury Gold Cup

On form and present fitness Topsy looks one of the brightest chances in the Canterbury Gold Cup, first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Riccarton tomorrow.

Mr R. A. Whyte’s brilliant Sovereign Edition mare supplied the answer to any question about her present fitness with a show of high speed in a seven furlong trail on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. With D. H. Harris up she ran the distance in 1.27 3-5, th efirst three furlongs In 36 2-5 and the four in 50.

Earlier in the training Count Kereru, the Canterbury Gold Cup top-weight, recorded Imin 29 4-ssec. Unlike Topsy, he worked up to his best speed during the trial and came in from the half mile in 48 4-ssec.

Count Kereru will carry 131 b more than Topsy in the lira limited handicap event. Both looked close to winning form when they raced at Trentham last month, Count Kereru for a placed run against the sprinters and a second in the Harcourt Stakes, Topsy for a fourth in the Pearce Handicap. Topsy showed her ability at a middle distance last summer. She won the Manawatu Cup at Ilf under 7-11, then the Wairarapa Challenge Cup (Ilf) in the record time of 2mm 13 4-ssec. Good form In the autumn she won the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at a mile, carried 8-5 into third behind Sailing Home and Game in the New Zealand International Invitation Stakes, Ilf, at Te Rapa, and 8-11 into second, half a length from Sailing Home tn the Stars Travel Stakes at Tauranga. Her third behind Sailing Home and Game at Te Rapa was achieved under some difficulties.

She was "paddling” in a bad patch of ground three furlongs from home, but once on better ground in the i straight she finished at a great rate, cutting heavily into the lead Sailing Home and Game held over her a furlong and a half out. A start for Tre lay was not certain yesterday. His trainer, H. A. Anderton, had some fears about the effects of a race on a ligament that has given some trouble. If he does run, the Otago stayer will have a change of riders, with J. R. Dowling replacing the horse’s usual partner. A. K. Robinson.

Probably the South Island’s brightest hope, in the absence of Trelay, is the three-year-old His Bestone. He was a fair third in the New Zealand Derby and the drop from 8-10 to 7-7 should do much for him. PEAKE TO RIDE

The Auckland jockey, D. A. Peake, will come south to ride His Bestone tomorrow.

Kaukapakapa’s fifth fresh up in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday, will assure him of solid backing in the Jockey Club Handicap, second leg of the double. Kaukapakapa’s wins in a light programme last season were at six and seven furlongs, but he showed fair competence as a miler when fourth in the weight-for-age King’s Plate at Ellerslie on Auckland Cup day. His win over 7f in the Members’ Handicap at the last New Zealand Cup meeting was memorable; his winning margin was five lengths.
