Equality in schools
(N.Z. Press Association? AUCKLAND, November 5. Women are now eligible to become primary school principals. Education Department regulations preventing* women from progressing further than third-in-charge have been amended. And, because more men have been taking on traditionally female jobs in infant departments, all mention of sex has been dropped by the Education Department. The changes result from a five-yearly report to the Minister of Education last year by the Central Advisory Committee, which includes representatives of teachers, education boards and the Education Department. All teaching jobs have been thrown open to men or women and the titles of headmaster, first assistant, senior woman, supervisor junior classes and assistant teacher, have been dropped. They are replaced by principal, deputy principal, senior teacher and teacher. The changes were effective on November 1.
