WATTIES GROUP
Challenge dismissed (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Nov. 6. The leader of the Social Credit Party (Mr B. Beetham) stood by comments he made on the “Gallery” television programme against the Wattle group of companies. He dismissed as “ridiculous” a challenge by Sir James Wattie for Mr Beetham to prove that the Wattie group is a monopoly, or to retract the statement he made.
Mr Beetham had singled out Watties when asked to name the companies which Social Credit’s anti-trust proposals were aimed at. “In the case of Watties we would force that company to fragment,” Mr Beetham, a lecturer in history at Waikato Teachers’ Training College, had said. Sir James Wattie said that Mr Beetham’s statement was a very damaging one, “which I can only put down to his inexperience.”
“This man is right off the beat altogether,” Sir James Wattie said. “I think it would be better if Mr Beetham stayed as a lecturer. We have plenty of competitors, therefore we have no monopoly.” “My statement that Watties is a monoply does not need to be proven,” Mr Beetham said. “It is abundantly clear to anyone with any knowledge of economics.”
