CIGARETTES GO UP
'New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 6. Higher prices for cigarettes and tobacco from tomorrow were announced tonight by the Price Tribunal. The tribunal said in a press statement that it had authorised the maximum retail price of cigarettes to be increased 1c for a packet of 20, and the maximum retail price of tobacco to be increased by 3c for 2oz. The tribunal said that higher prices followed an application by the tobacco manufacturing companies on an industry basis for “recoupment of increased costs which manufacturers are unable to absorb.” The tribunal said that appropriate adjustments had been made to the share of the retail price allocated to the distributive trades.
