Brought up with breed

The president of the Canterbury Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Club, Mr H. G. Jamieson, of AUandale Station, Fairlie, has been brought up with Hereford cattle. His father, Mr J. F. K. Jamieson, ran Herefords but was not a stud breeder, although his son says that every bull he purchased

was eligible for registration. Mr H. G. Jamieson established his stud in 1950, when he was farming at Taiko near Timaru, with the purchase of seven females at the dispersal sale of the late Mr G. F. Moore’s Bushy Park herd at Wanganui. Today Mr Jamieson has a stud herd of about 60 to 70 cows, some 95 per cent of which are descended from the initial females.

Apart from the fact that he has been brought up with them and it is therefore natural that he continues to be interested in them, Mr Jamieson likes the breed in particular

because of its adaptability to most climatic conditions. He says he thinks that Herefords can be put on just about any property and seem to be able to survive under even the most severe climatic conditions.
