ONE TON TRIALS
Victory for Mark Twain (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY. The Victorian yacht Mark Twain revelled in a light northeasterly to win the fifth and final 30-mile One Ton Cup selection trial off Sydney Heads yesterday. The trial was the final test race held to select Australia’s three representatives for the world One Ton Cup championship to be held in Sydney from December 9. R. Langman skippered Mark Twain to a Imin 23sec victory over the world champion. Stormy Petrel (C. Curran). The New Zealand yacht Escapade (S. Fischer) finished a further 3mln ISsec astern third. Fourth was Pilgrim (G. Evans). On trial form, Mark Twain, Stormy Petrel and Pilgrim look set for selection.
Earlier, vandals caused damage estimated at more than *lOOO to Pilgrim. The Intruders smashed their way through the forward hatch and wrecked the sextant, handbearing compass, barometer and echo sounder as it lay at its moorings at the middle harbour marina. They also poured oil Into the ice box and tried to inflate the life-raft. They cut the yacht adrift and it was found floating in midstream early yesterday by a member of the Middle Harbour Yacht Club. It was the leading points scorer with two wins, a second and a fourth before yesterday’s race.
