Art display opened

“The artist is basic to our needs and contributes to the quality of our lives,” said the British Trade Commissioner, Mr W. J. Rumble, when he opened the tenth Exhibition of the Town and Country Art Club in the Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery last evening. Speaking of the development of art in relation to technology, Mr Rumble said that we now demanded, within the limits of function, that things be aesthetically pleasing. "Artists enrich our lives, and in so doing enrich their own,” he said. The vice-president (Mrs C. Mackenzie), said in an introductory speech that this year there had been increased interest in the activity of the club. This was the result of the assistance and stimulation afforded by the presence of tutors at some of the classes.

There were 150 members, and a small waiting list, she said. Ninety-six contributors were responsible for the 150 exhibits, the majority of which were water-colours.

Five paintings by the guest artist Aston Greathead were on display.
