Water supplies may be linked
Plans, specifications and costs for the joining of the Paparua and Halswell highgeneral improvement of the reticulation were pressure water-supply systems and for a called for by the Paparua County Council last evening with a view to calling tenders for the work at an early date.
The council authorised its engineering staff to work with private consultants in investigating a scheme of the type suggested to the council in July by the County Engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg). This involved a total cost of about $504,000 to connect the two systems, enlarge capacity, and build a large reservoir on the hills to help boost pressures. The County Clerk (Mr A. Kelly) said that since the council had received Mr Dyhrberg’s report, other questions had arisen. One was the supply of water to the Hendersons Road frontage of the Spreydon Lodge property. If the City Council would not supply water across the road, it would cost $20,000 to extend the Halswell main via Sparks Road. “There is also the need for a water-supply for Happy Home Road and, if and when requested, to Worsleys Spur and the development proposed by the Francis Estate,” said Mr Kelly. FINANCIAL LINKING With any extension of the system, he said, it would be desirable to integrate the
Paparua and Halswell schemes financially, and it would be all the more appropriate if, at the same time, steps were taken in an improvement of the system by the reservoir on the hills.
The council agreed in principle that, as an alternative to continuing negotiations with the City Council, the county was prepared to extend its supply to Hendersons Road.
It was decided to integrate the two systems financially from April 1 next and the staff was asked to begin work on adjustments of the Paparua and Halswell watersupply districts.
