Winning photos in "Press" contest

The first prize in “The Press” photographic competition has been awarded jointly to Mrs Olivia Mclntosh, of Gwynfa Avenue, Cashmere, and to Alastair Dyer, of Derby Street, St Albans.

Mrs Mclntosh’s picture is of an elderly woman pausing outside a beauty shop to check the contents of her purse. Mr Dyer’s photograph —which was published on page 3 of “The Press” on October 11 —is of a Parisian Child.

The judges—Messrs M. P. Conway and L. R. Bloxham—felt that these two pictures involved the viewer more than any of the 1000 other prints submitted, and considered that too little separated them for either to be placed first on its own. The award-winners were both taken on relatively inexpensive cameras. Mrs McIntosh used a Kowa singlelens reflex camera which was a birthday present from her late husband; Mr Dyer used a Canon half-frame camera. PARIS, CHRISTCHURCH Mr Dyer’s photograph was taken on the other side of the world—Paris. Mrs Mclntosh found hers in Beckenham. No-one could have been more consistent than Mr Dyer, for he entered only the one photograph. Mrs Mclntosh sent in nine prints, won prizes with two of them, and has five on display in the main office of “The Press.” John Perrone, of Elizabeth Street, Riccarton, took first prize in the scenic section and won a weekly prize with another of the four pictures he entered.

Shirley Peverill, of Kaikoura, submitted many excellent photographs. But for very strong competition, Mrs Peverill would have won more than the two prizes she was awarded. The first prize in the activity section went to Bill Fenner, of Greenpark R.D., who made enterprising use of an extreme wide-angle lens and a relatively slow shutter speed. Of the 18 winning prints, 11 came from the Christchurch district. Two came from Kaikoura, and one each

from Hamilton, Westport, Tinwald, Ashburton, and Rangiora. Three-quarters of the entries were from Christchurch. The winning photographs and 70 others are now on display in the main office of “The Press,” and may be viewed there until Thursday evening. PHOTOGRAPHY PAGE Most of the winners have already been reproduced in “The Press,” and two more appear on the Practical Photography page today (Page 15). The rest will appear soon. Other entries of exceptional interest will be printed in subsequent issues of the Practical Photography page, which is usually published on the second Wednesday in the month.
