Good swimming times

In spite of e cold northeasterly wind there wot a good response by swimmers to the North Beech club's open and under 14 carnival on Saturday afternoon. Rain was falling for the latter part of the carnival, but this <Td not deter the enthusiasm of the swimmers and in spite of the eold conditions some good times were returned by several of the centre’s top swimmers who were competing. Probably the most noticeable of these »as G. Dinnlson (Wbarenui), who apparently has been training hard throughout the winter. Basically a middle and long distance swimmer. Dlnnison has shown a marked improvement in his sprinting this On Saturday, he had the fastest 100 vards freestyle time for the nine heats swum, with So.tsec. and tn the 200 yards freestyle he broke two minutes with a fine swim of Imin 57.35ec. With these Improved sprint times he should make great inroads Into his middle and long distance times later in the season. One of the outstanding young swimmers last season. Miss J. Murdoch (Wharenui), did a creditable Imin 13.8 sec in the 100 vards backstroke and in the 200 yards event, R. Gray (Wharenui) did an excellent 2min USsec with virtually no competition. B. Lewis (Wharenui'. who can usually be relied on for a consistent performance In breaststroke events, did not damage his reputation with a very good time of 2min 32.75ec in the 200 vards breaststroke. Later tn the 100 yards breaststroke. Miss XV. Wakefield Wharenui) turned In Imin 10.2 sec, a fine early season swim.

Several swimmers had good times in the 100 yards freestvle heats. P. Kirkpatrick XVharenoil won his heat In the good time of Imin 3*ec and B. Honeybone 'St Albans), normally

[a breaststroker, showed added versatility with a 57.8 sec 100 I yards. , M. Trembath (Wharenui), with 57.4aec, and Miss P. Horne (Wharenui) imin 0 3sec, also had good times, Miss Horne’s the fastest of the women. Results of events were:— Open 100 vards freestyle.—Heat 1: B. Smuiders (Wh.) 1, S. Griffin (Nth ® ' 2 .
