Prison term for cruelty

(N.Z. Press Association' HAMILTON, Nov. 3. A Hamilton youth who set fire to a goat was sentenced to two months imprisonment when he appeared in the (Hamilton Magistrate's Court for sentence on a charge of wilfully ill-treating the animal. “It was calculated cruelty to an animal, just about as bad as can be imagined,” said Mr J. E. Millar, S.M., when passing sentence. Errol Crosby Seager, aged 20, pleaded guilty to the charge at an earlier hearing. Three other youths who accompanied Seager were sentenced to periodic detention centre training. David John Booth, aged 17, an apprentice carpenter, was sentenced to three months training, and Barry John Hainsworth and Denis John Howe, both aged 17, to six months. Seager was also admitted to probation for 12 months and ordered to pay compensation not exceeding $25 to the owner of the goat.
