Track cycling begins

It was almost as though there had been no break from last track season to this. Track cycling started at English Park yesterday, and A. D. Morris took up where he had left off by winning the feature scratch race. What was more remarkable about Morris’s winning the Marlin five-mile scratch race, at the end of the meeting sponsored by U.E.B. Industries, Ltd—as part of the Hornby Festival — was that he had been riding since last Sunday in the Dulux sixday race. He finished ninth in that, returned by inter-island ferry on Saturday evening, switched to his track machine, and still had enough sharpness to perform well.

One of the more aggressive riders in the scratch race, Morris broke clear after earlier efforts in the final three laps, and with J. H. J. Chesmar trying to stay with him. After the bell, there was a desperate chase which featured R. M. G. A. Heyde and P. L. Paviell, but although they caught a tired Chesmar, Morris kept well clear. He thus maintained an unusual record of success—by breaking away in nine scratch races.

Morris apart, the sharpest riders on show were Paviell and Heyde. Paviell won a close decision for second in the long scratch race, but Heyde was a clear winner of the quarter-mile series held earlier. None of the back-markers got up in the Mono two-mile wheel race, which carried more substantial prizes than is usual. A solid bunch of middle-markers, from 180 yd. caught the front quicklv. stayed there, and P. G. Robinson beat J. F. Delore and Chesmar very comfortably. NOVICES There was interest in the brief programme raced by the novices, too. J. K. Fowler, a member of

|the Canterbury team last season, 'showed impressive early-season . form to win the Westbrook onei mile scratch race from G. K. Sibley. D. J. Taylor, a prominent road rider but just starting on th? track, made a good start with third place. He and K P Basher —both off 20yd—-could make little impression on K. W. Reid in the quar-ter-mile. Reid had five yards start on those two, and held it ’ easily to the end. S. J. Craig, in the B grade, also showed handy form in winning both his races with some- • thing to spare. There were also demonstrations of the three Olympic lifts 1 —including the now -abandoned press—by three Canterbury i weight-lifters. A. J. Ebert, the Olympic Games competitor, demonstrated the snatch; R. Smart • the press; and P. Dorreen the [clean and jerk. i The cycling programme was ! held to benefit Miss Sandra Mo Lauchlan. the Watties candidate for Queen of the Hornby Festival. It also gave promise of a

fine season, with the races—eve at this early stage—being co\ ered in fast times. Results: — Amateur Scratch —A grade quarter-mu. R M G. A. Heyde 1. P I Paviell 2. J R Campbell 3 Tim< 31.6.
