Both sides were in trouble early because of wild passes by Going and Edwards. Cardiff gave away three penalties through foolish infringements. Karam put the second and third kicks over from 45 yards and 47 yards to put the All Blacks ahead, 6-0, after 13min.

From a cross-field kick by Burgess, Williams almost scored, the ball just evading his fingertips. The referee raised his arm for a try but quickly changed his mind and ruled a drop-out.

Growing confidence among the New Zealand backs was checked when Lewis made a fine interception and the All Blacks were fortunate to scramble the ball out in the comer.

Going missed an attempt at goal from 65 yards, and Finlayson replied with a strong run for Cardiff which showed New* Zealand tackling in bad light. Three minutes before half time Kirkpatrick scored the first New Zealand try against Cardiff since 1935 at the end of a thrilling 30-yard run. Batty gained the ball after a ruck, and passed to Wyllie, who broke through on the blind side and passed infield to his captain. Half-time score: New Zealand 10, Cardiff 0. KNOCK OUT

Matheson was knocked out in the fourth minute and was carried off on a stretcher. Cardiff defended stubbornly under vigorous pressure but after 15min conceded a seconded try. James tried a little kick from a drop-out but Going snapped it up and broke through. Kirkpatrick carried the ball on with a strong run, Holmes helped, and Sayers was put in the clear to run round behind the posts. Karam converted to make the score, 16-0. The New Zealand forwards were showing great thrust in the scrums. Going caught Edwards once, Kirkpatrick

dived on the bail, and the pack drove over the top to the goal-line.

Then Going was caught by Edwards and Cardiff swept downfield. Williams was kicked in the ribs making the save.

After 25min Going received a ball from Kirkpatrick after good work by G. J. Whiting, sent four defenders the wrong way and passed to Batty, who sprinted well and dived over in a tackle. Eight minutes from the end Lane made a break after a scrum and passed to John, who gave a reverse pass for Edwards to score. Davies missed the kick and a penalty from halfway when Karam was penalised after the touchdown.
