West Coast
Five candidates are contesting the West Coast seat which this election extends northwards to take in Westport and beyond. The sitting member, Mr P. Blanchfield, is again standing for Labour, and Greymouth schoolteacher, Mr J. D. Bruerton, is the National Party’s candidate. A former Mayor of Greymouth, Dr B. M. Dallas, is again making a bit to enter Parliament as an independent. In 1969 he polled 4570 votes, against 6449 by Mr Blanchfield. Neither candidate for the minority parties lives on the West Coast. The Social Credit candidate, Mrs H. N. Woodhall, lives in Marlborough, and the New Democrat candidate, Mr C. F. Woods, a retired accountant and former Collector of Customs in Welltagton, lives in Nelson.
