Suburban cricket spoilt by weather

Bad light and rain about afternoon tea prevented any possible exciting finishes in the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s senior competition on Saturday. Merivale-Papanui was all out for 131 in its second innings, leaving Woolston Working Men s Club 120 minute* to score 103 runs for victory. However, the game was evenly poised when bad light and rain stopped play' with eight of the compulsory 15 overs in the last hour still to be bow’led. Woolston had scored 45 for the loss of five wickets. Hornby declared its first innings at the overnight score of 140 for seven wickets. Sumner did better in its second turn at the wicket and was 127 for six wickets when the game was abandoned an hour before schedule. Resuming its second innings. Heathcote scored quickly and in two hours put on 168 runs before declaring at 173 for two wickets. Waltham’s bowlers never faltered and, led by the captain, S. Robinson, kept the ball well up to the batsmen, who were in an aggressive mood. Bad light and damp conditions had Waltham batting out the remainder of play after the tea interval. Beckenham declared its first innings closed at 213 for seven wickets, a lead of 102 over Burnslde. However. Burnside batted

better in its second inning* and after averting the outright loss bv an innings, batted out time and was 163 for eight at stumps. Points are: Merivale-Papanui and Hornby 25, Woolston 22.
