“HAD TO WIN”
N.Z. official delighted (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.J CARDIFF. The AU Black manager, Mr E. Todd, was delighted with his team’s win against Cardiff. “This was one game we had to win,” he said. “The improvements in our play came as expected, especially in the forwards." Mr Todd described the actions of a section of the crowd as “unfortunate," especially in booing the right wing, B. G. Williams. He said that Williams would be the last player to descend to dubious tactics.
The coach, Mr R. H Duff, was also pleased, although not wholly satisfied because of potential scoring opportunities lost through individual errors. Some dropped or misdirected passes by the backs, and some occasions when forwards failed to set up rucks properly, detracted from the team's performance. "However, do not get me wrong,” Mr Duff said: “This win was like emerging from a tunnel and seeing daylight.”
