PANDAS ON DISPLAY
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, Nov. 5. More than 2000 people and 300 riot police were on hand today when the Ueno Zoo, Tokyo, opened its gates for the first public showing of Kang Kang and Lan Lan—two giant pandas given to Japan by China. The riot police were there to guard against Right-wing demonstrations and possible disorder.
Each of the visitors to the zoo—about 30 of whom spent a chilly night outside the gates last night—was allowed two minutes to look at the bears, while moving along a one-way path outside the enclosure. Cameras were prohibited. Kang Kang, a two-year-old male, and Lan Lan, a three-year-old female, were presented as a gift from China to mark the establishment of diplomatic ties with Japan in September.
