N.S.W. teachers to strike
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY, November 5. New South Wales’s 30,000 teachers will hold a 24-hour strike next Thursday, in a protest for more pay. A mass meeting will be held in Sydney on that day, to consider further action. The strike follows the breakdown of talks between the Public Service Board and the Teachers’ Federation. The board refused to discuss salary increases until the federation dropped its opposition to teachers’ taking “extras” — additional classes —when colleagues are absent from school. The teachers have claimed an average of a 30 per cent salary rise.
