Maori legends
Maori Legends. By A. W. Reed. Reed. 48 pp. Glossary. For this new collection, A. W. Reed has selected and adapted a number of Maori legends from his well-known, more comprehensive works on the subject; though only 13 legends are related here, they do include several interesting, less familiar ones, and offer a good indication of the range that Maori mythology covers. Because of its selective nature one imagines that this book is intended mainly for younger readers, although no concessions are made in its language. Roger Hart is known for his illustrations to several of A. W. Reed’s earlier books; the 14 colour plates and numerous drawings by him are a feature of this volume, and are most effective in engaging the youthful imagination in the world of the legends.
