New job for Barlow

<N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 3. Detective Chief Superintendent Charles Barlow has been “written out” of the popular British Broadcasting Corporation television series “Softly, Softly.” For the 13 million Britons who regularly watch the show, it is like losing their local policeman. Mr Barlow, who in real life is Stratford Johns, has been in the programme for seven years; and before that he had starred in “Z Cars.”

The “Softly, Softly” producer, Leonard Lewis, explained: "If Barlow had stayed for ever, there was a danger of us getting into a rut. We have a policy to keep changes going, in line with real police work.” So last night Mr Barlow was transferred to a police research job with the Home Office. But the gamble of running “Softly, Softly” without him is more of an eachway bet: the 8.8. C. has explained that the transfer is not a permanent posting and that he could return. In the meantime, Stratford Johns would have his own series, “Barlow at Large.”
