NEW PAY CHECKS

‘Easing out’ of authority (N.Z Press Association) ROTORUA, Nov. 3. The Stabilisation of Remuneration Authority would be “eased out” within 12 months, the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) said in Rotorua today. It would make way for a wage-fixing mechanism in the new industrial-relations legislation, he told a lunch-time meeting of about 200.

He described as "apalling, and irresponsible” the immediate removal of the authority as proposed by the Labour Party in its manifesto. “We would be back into the wage-price spiral before March next year,” said Mr Muldoon. “We have struggled for four years to bring this spiral under control. An extra SlO a week is no good to a working man if everyone else receives $lO as well.” He said that New Zealand “could live with” the recent 4.2 per cent cost-of-living increase, and also the 1.1 per cent price increase.
