Change in status?
Leading Rugby league players who have withdrawn from New Zealand touring teams because of financial reasons would undoubtedly be amused by a section of the World Cup preview published in the British newspaper, “The Times.” Comparing the selected squads, “The Times” said that “unlike the French, the three other nations will field professional teams, which gives them a distinct advantage in fitness and cohesion.” Australian club players were recently shocked that limits of §2OOO (to sign on) and $2OO (per match) were to be imposed from next season. Few of their counterparts in this country would be paid enough to cover travelling expenses to training and games.
